Moda años 60

Los ’60, fueron una década de cambio, rebeldía y renovación para todos los ámbitos. En el de la moda, especialmente la femenina, lo podemos ver claramente reflejado a través del movimiento hippie, estilo rocker, la primera aparición de la minifalda y las botas altas.

The sixties was a decade of change, rebelliousness and innovation at all levels. In the field of fashion, especially women’s fashion, we can see these features reflected through the hippie movement, the rock style, the first appearance of miniskirts and high boots.

Para comenzar, me gustaría tratar el movimiento hippie. Este estilo representa la rebeldía, ya que rechazan los valores de la sociedad, lo que les lleva a crear una  propia con sus creencias. Como observamos, sus ropas se caracterizan principalmente por la extravagancia, el uso de colores llamativos y estampados que tengan que ver con la naturaleza, o libertad, como por ejemplo, el famoso símbolo de la paz o estampados florales. También, podemos encontrar chalecos de cuero, y camisetas con lemas de protesta contra la guerra, seguramente los más famosos, que todos conocemos, son “Make love, not war” o “Flower power”. Y, por supuesto, otro atuendo esencial son los pantalones de campana, que crearan tendencia en la siguiente década.

Los completos en este estilo son fundamentales para perfeccionar el look. Unos claros ejemplos son las gafas redondas, como las de John Lennon o Janis Joplin, el uso de pañuelos o cintas de cuero alrededor de la cabeza, y collares o pulseras con el símbolo de la paz.
Finalmente, no nos podemos olvidar de que los hippies estuvieran en contra del consumismo, por lo que normalmente creaban su propia ropa, o la compraban de segunda mano. 

To start, I would like to talk about the hippie movement. This style represents the rebelliousness, since it rejected the values of the society and created one own with its own beliefs. As we can see, their clothes were mainly characterized by the extravagance, bright colors and patterns related to the nature or freedom. It is the case of the popular peace symbol or the floral patterns. We also can find leather waistcoats and T-shirts with protest slogans against the war, probably the most famous ones are “Make love, not war” or “Flower power”. And, of course, the bell-bottoms were other essential elements and they would set the trend the following decade.

The complements of the said style are mainly in order to improve the look. The rounded glasses are a clear example, as the ones of John Lennon or Janis Joplin; the use of leather headbands and bandannas and collars or bracelets with the peace symbol.

Finally, we cannot forget that hippies were against consumerism, reason why they created their own clothing or they wore second-hand clothes.

Otro hecho histórico en la moda, fue la aparición de las minifaldas y vestidos cortos, que dan lugar a un estilo juvenil y sensual, y por supuesto, a un símbolo de libertad. Esta creación se la debemos a la diseñadora británica Mary Quant. En sus diseños, utilizaba colores alegres y estampados geométricos. Las botas altas por encima de la rodilla, las medias estampadas e impermeables de colores llamativos también fueron impulsados por esta gran diseñadora, que denotan un look divertido.

Other historical fact in fashion was the appearance of miniskirts and short dresses which lead to a youthful and sexy style, and of course, to a freedom symbol. Mary Quant was the British fashion designer who made this creation. She used fresh colors and geometrical patterns in her designs. The high boots over the knees, the patterned stockings and raincoats with bright colors were also launched by this great designer. These characteristics marked a fun look.

El look naif, es el más inocente y coqueto de la década. Lo común de este estilo, era el conjunto de chaquetas y faldas, preferiblemente de colores tono pastel o claros, y lisos. Los accesorios imprescindibles eran los bolsos de mano de charol, y los pendientes y collares de perlas.

The naif line was the most innocent and charming look of the decade. The typical thing in this style was the set of jackets and skirts, preferably without any print and with light and pastel colors. The essential accessories were patent handbags and pearl earrings and collars.

Respecto al peinado en los ’60, lo habitual era llevar el pelo corto y con mucho volumen con accesorios para el cabello, como lazos, cintas para recoger el pelo, flores o tocados. También el peinado ‘Bob’ era típico de esta etapa, impulsado por Mary Quant, que lo acompañaba con un flequillo recto.
During the sixties, women used to wear short and voluminous hair with accessories such as hair ties, hairbands, flowers and headdresses. The Bob Hairstyle also was typical of this moment. This style used to include a blunt fringe, creation of Mary Quant once again.

Para finalizar con la moda femenina, hablaré del maquillaje. Los ojos siempre destacaban por la abundancia de rímel, delineador negro y, sombras que pueden ser de cualquier color. Los labios naturales, o colores como el rosa palo eran los que predominaban.

To end up with women’s fashion, I am going to talk about make-up. A very characteristic feature was the abundance of mascara, black eye-liner and shadows of all colors. Lips could be very natural or wear a pale pink.

El estilo hippie, también marcó tendencia en la moda masculina. Como la mayoría de prendas eran unisex, poseían las mismas características mencionadas anteriormente, salvo que, los hombres dejaron crecer sus cabellos y barba.

The hippie style also set the trend in men’s fashion. Since the vast majority of the clothes were unisex, these had the same features that I mentioned above. The only difference was that men let their hairs and beards grow.

El ‘mod’, el estilo que utilizaban los Beatles al comienzo de su carrera, consistía en el uso de trajes ajustados, con camisa, y corbatas delgadas. De abrigos destacaban las parkas verdes del ejército americano y las chaquetas.

The one called ‘mod’ was the style that The Beatles used at the beginning of their career. It consisted on the use of tight suits with shirts and thin ties. I also have to highlight the frequent use of jackets and the green parkas, typical of the American army.

El look rocker, aunque tuviese su auge en los setenta, en este período debido al éxito del rock and roll, se comenzó a llevar las botas y chaquetas de cuero acompañado de una camiseta básica o de algún grupo musical.

Although the rocker look was much more popular during the seventies, it started in the sixties due to the success of rock and roll. Boots and leather jackets were the main symbols of this style, accompanied by a basic or a musical group T-shirt.

En general, en esta década vemos una moda más juvenil correspondiente a cada edad, y un gran avance social, sobre todo para la mujer, por el uso de la minifalda o vestidos cortos, en protesta ante el estilo, y mente tradicional establecidos anteriormente.

In general, in this decade, we see a more youthful fashion corresponding to every age and a great social progress for women, especially with the use of miniskirts and short dresses. We have to consider them as a protest against the previous thinking and style.
