Para la música, los ’50 fueron una década
de oro, ya que nació el influyente género del rock and roll.
For music, the fifties was the golden decade, since it
was in this period when the influential gender of rock and roll was born.
Para entender el rock and roll, hay que
remontarse años atrás, a la corriente “Race Music”, que cambió su nombre a “Rhythm
and blues” (R&B) por sus connotaciones racistas. Otra corriente popular de
esa época era el country, swing,
y no olvidar la mágica voz de los solistas Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Andy
Williams o Bing Crosby.
Entre
estos movimientos musicales, Bill Halley mezcló el country de su grupo “Bill
Haley and the Comets” con el R&B, desembocando
en el estilo rockabilly, con la canción “Rock around the clock”. Bill Haley es
uno de los fundadores y considerado el padre de esta increíble corriente
musical, que desde mi punto de vista es de las mejores y divertidas, además de ser
la causante del nacimiento de otros estilos esenciales para la historia de la
música como el rock, rock psicodélico, alternativo, hard rock o glam rock.
In order to understand this type of music, we have to
travel years ago, to the Race Music trend,
which we currently know as Rhythm and
Blues (R&B) due to its racist connotations. Other musical genres were country and swing, and, concerning mythical and magical voices I must highlight
the ones of Frank Sinatra, Tone Bennet, Andy Williams or Bing Crosby. Within
these musical movements, Bill Haley mixed up the country of his group, Bill Haley and The Comets, with R&B, and
this led to the rockabilly style of
the song Rock Around The Clock. Bill
Haley is the father of the said style and he is considered one of the founders
of this incredible musical genre, which, from my point of view, is one of the
best and funniest ones, apart from being the cause of the start of other
essential styles in the history of music, such as rock and roll, psychedelic
and alternative rock, hard rock or glam rock.

A parte de Bill Haley, la figura más importante de
la década fue Elvis Presley, el Rey del rock and roll, que se encargó
personalmente de popularizar este género, y lo logró masivamente, además de
saberlo bailar como decimos en mi tierra “con arte”. ¿Quién no se acuerda de sus
movimientos de cadera? Recordemos que su apodo también era, “Elvis, la pelvis”.
Este magnífico artista nos dejó grandes temas que todavía siguen estando
presentes en la vida de los amantes del rock.
Besides Bill Haley, the most important figure of this
decade was Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, and who personally took
charge of popularize this genre, and he got it heavily, and in addition, he knew
how to dance, as people say in my region, “with great art”. Who can’t remember
his hips movements? Let’s remind that his nickname also was “Elvis, the
Pelvis”. This fantastic artist left us great songs that the lovers of rock and
roll still love and listen to.

Dentro
de este género no nos podemos olvidar de Chuck Berry y Little Richard. El
primero destaca por ser uno de los mejores guitarristas de la historia y de los
más influyentes, incluyendo el hecho de que aproximadamente más de cincuenta
bandas han versionado alguna de sus canciones. Del segundo, podemos decir que
conocemos sus portentosas canciones, por su inigualable forma de tocar el piano
y la marca jovial y sexual de sus canciones, que tuvo que rectificar al
comienzo de su carrera. En su primer éxito “Tutti fruti”, el texto original,
tuvo que cambiarlo por una versión, por así decirlo, más light. Igualmente, entre
las personalidades más destacadas de la década encontramos a Bo Didley, Fats
Domino y Jerry Lee Lewis.
In this gender, we cannot forget Chuck Berry and
Little Richard. The first stands out for being one of the best guitarist of all
times and he also was one of the most influential, including the fact that
approximately more of fifty bands have versioned some of his songs. About the second one, we can say that all we
know his prodigious songs, because of his incomparable way of playing the piano
and his cheerful and sexual hallmark, which he had to correct at the beginning
of his career. In his first hit, “Tutti Fruti”, he had to change the original
lyrics for another lighter version. Similarly, among the most remarkable
figures of the fifties, we find Bo Didley, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Asimismo, Johnny Cash fue una estrella que brilló
en esta década. El cantautor cuenta con diversos registros musicales, entre sus
más destacados el country y el famoso de los ’50, el rock and roll. Una
curiosidad que me gustaría contaros es que a finales del 56, coincidieron Elvis
Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins y Johnny Cash en un estudio de la
discográfica Sun Records, en el que
improvisaron numerosas canciones, que luego fueron difundidas con el nombre “Million
Dollar Quartet”.
Also, Johnny Cash was a star that shone during this
decade. This singer and compositor counted on several musical registers, the
most popular ones: country and rock
and roll of the fifties. One curious thing I would like to tell you is that at
the end of 1956, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash
agreed on a studio of the recording Sun Records, where they improvised a big amount of
songs which were spread and called Million
Dollar Quartet.

Los
Beatles, tuvieron su inicio al final de esta década, cuando se reunieron, tres
de los cuatro, en un grupo llamado “The Quarrymen”, creado por John Lennon y
compañeros suyos, a los que posteriormente se unieron Paul McCartney y George Harrison. Siento no escribir acerca de ellos ahora, pero ya lo explicaré mejor en
la próxima década, con el boom de los
Beatles. ;)
The Beatles started to play at the end of the fifties,
when three of them formed part of a group whose name was The Quarrymen, created
by John Lennon and some friends of him. Paul McCartney and George Harrison joined
later. I am sorry for not telling you more details right now, but I will explain
it much better in the post of the sixties, with the boom of this famous group.
